World’s Best Heading to Germany for the World Equestrian Festival Aachen CHIO

This month, one of the world’s biggest and most competitive annual equestrian competitions is taking place – the World Equestrian Festival in Aachen, Germany, July 12-22. The event hosts competition in five of the FEI’s eight disciplines — Eventing, Driving, Vaulting, and the two we feature at the FEI World Cup Finals in Las Vegas, Jumping and Dressage.

The U.S. is sending a super strong team in jumping, led by two riders who have won the World Cup Finals — Olympic double Gold medalists Beezie Madden, who won the FEI World Cup Finals twice (2013 and 2018), and McLain Ward, who won the Final in 2017.

Joining them are  two-time Olympic veteran Laura Kraut, who won a team Gold medal at the 2008 Olympics in Hong Kong, Kent Farrington, team Silver medalist at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, and Nicole Shahinian-Simpson, who has competed at six World Cup Finals, including two in Las Vegas (2005, 2003) and who was also a member of U.S. Team at the 2002 World Equestrian Games.

These riders will compete in several individual classes as well as the main jumping competition, the Nations Cup team competition which is taking place on Thursday, July 18.

The Dressage competition will be equally exciting with another team of experienced U.S. riders. While the U.S. jumping horses have not yet been announced, the dressage horses have been.

Steffen Peters will be riding Four Winds Farm and Akiko Yamazaki’s 11-year-old KWPN gelding “Suppenkasper.” In the four Olympics in which Peters has competed, he has won three Bronze medals – most recently at the 2016 Games in Rio. He has competed at five World Cup Finals, including 2007 when he finished third and 2009 when he emerged as World Cup champion!

Lyle competed in her first World Cup Final this year in Gothenburg, where she and “Salvino” finished seventh. Also on the U.S. team are WEG veterans Katherine Bateson-Chandler, who will be riding Jane Clark’s 14-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding “Alcazar,” and Shelly Francis, who will be riding Patricia Stempel’s 15-year-old Hanoverian gelding “Danilo,” whom she rode in the 2018 World Cup Finals in Paris where they finished 12th.

The Dressage Nations Cup will consist of the Grand Prix CDIO5* on Thursday, July 18, and the Grand Prix Special CDIO5* on Saturday, July 20. The Grand Prix Freestyle CDIO5* will take place on Sunday, July 21, for individual honors.  In addition to the U.S. riders, we know the field at Aachen will feature many of the sport’s elite riders who are likely to be competing at the 2020 FEI World Cup™ Finals in Las Vegas next April 15-19.
